Begin with your group
Consider the number of people, how much time you have and whether anyone is new to card games. A short game with a clear objective is a useful starting point for a mixed group.
Check the equipment
Confirm whether the chosen game needs one standard deck, several decks or a specialised pack. Remove or retain jokers according to the relevant rules. Count the cards before the first round.
Explain before dealing
Describe the goal, turn order and how the game ends. Demonstrate one turn using open cards. New players should have an opportunity to ask questions before a timed or competitive round.
Agree on house rules
Write down any changes to the standard version. A rule remembered from another family may be different from the rule used at your table. Resolve this before someone makes a move based on another expectation.
Keep the session welcoming
Choose a pace that works for everyone and allow breaks. If a game is too complicated for the group, switch to a simpler format rather than extending an uncomfortable session.
